Most drone buying decisions start with one question: do you need a multirotor that can hover in one place, or a fixed-wing aircraft that can cover distance? VTOL fixed-wing UAVs sit between the two. This guide explains how each type works and where each one fits.

How a multirotor drone works

A multirotor, such as a quadcopter or an X8 coaxial drone, gets all of its lift from its rotors. That makes it simple to launch from almost anywhere and lets it hover precisely over one spot, which is ideal for inspection, close surveillance and carrying a payload to a fixed point.

The cost is efficiency. Because the motors work constantly just to stay in the air, flight time and range are limited compared with an aircraft that has wings.

How a VTOL fixed-wing UAV works

A VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) fixed-wing UAV uses rotors to take off and land like a multirotor, then flies on its wings like an aeroplane. Once its wings carry the load, it uses far less power, so it can stay up longer and travel further. You get fixed-wing range without needing a runway or a catapult launcher.

The trade-off is that a fixed-wing aircraft does not hover efficiently, and the airframe is larger, so it suits wide-area work better than close inspection.

Which one fits your mission?

Choose a multirotor when…

  • you need to hold position over a target, a structure or a crowd
  • you are carrying a heavy payload over a shorter distance
  • you have to launch quickly from a confined space

In our range, Vision 2.0 is a foldable surveillance quadcopter with a stabilised PTZ camera and GPS-denied navigation, and Vision 4.0 is an X8 coaxial drone that carries up to 5 kg for 50 minutes.

Choose a VTOL fixed-wing when…

  • you need to patrol a border, pipeline, coastline or large site
  • you are mapping a wide area in as few flights as possible
  • there is no runway, but range still matters

Vision 3.0 is our VTOL fixed-wing UAV, with up to 50 km range and 45 minutes of endurance.

Still not sure?

Many operators end up using both: a VTOL fixed-wing for the wide-area search and a multirotor for the close look once something is found. If you share the area, endurance and payload you need, our team can suggest the right mix. See all of our drone platforms or our mission capabilities.
